BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The white gunman accused of massacring 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket wrote way back to November about staging a livestreamed assault on African Americans, practiced taking pictures from his car and traveled hours from his residence in March to scout out the store, according to detailed diary entries he appears to have posted online.

The writer of the diary posted hand-drawn maps of the grocery retailer together with tallies of the number of Black individuals he counted there, and recounted how a Black security guard at the grocery store confronted him that day to ask what he was up to. A Black safety guard was among the lifeless in Saturday’s capturing rampage.

The diary taken from the chat platform Discord got here to light two days after 18-year-old Payton Gendron allegedly opened fireplace with an AR-15-style rifle at the Tops Friendly Market. He was sporting physique armor and used a helmet digicam to livestream the bloodbath on the web, authorities stated.

He surrendered contained in the grocery store and was arraigned on a murder charge over the weekend. He pleaded not guilty and was jailed below a suicide watch. Federal authorities are considering bringing hate crime expenses.

Copies of the web materials were shared with The Related Press by Marc-André Argentino, a analysis fellow on the London-based Worldwide Centre for the Research of Radicalisation and Political Violence.

A transcript of the diary entries was apparently posted publicly someday forward of the attack. It was not clear how many individuals might need seen the entries. Consultants mentioned it was possible however unlikely the diary might have been altered by somebody aside from the creator.

The FBI’s top agent in Buffalo, Stephen Belongia, indicated on a name with other officials Monday that investigators are Gendron’s Discord exercise, citing posts last summer about physique armor and guns and others last month by which he taunted federal authorities. Belongia gave no particulars in the call, a recording of which the AP obtained.

However in an April 17 put up apparently by Gendron, he exhorted readers to kill brokers from the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Messages looking for comment were left with Gendron’s attorneys. Nobody answered the door at his household’s house.

The violence spread grief and anger in Buffalo and past.

Former Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield Jr., who misplaced his 86-year-old mom, Ruth Whitfield, within the taking pictures, requested how the country might permit its historical past of racist killings to repeat itself.

“We’re not simply hurting. We’re angry,” Whitfield said at a news convention with civil rights lawyer Ben Crump and others. “We treat individuals with decency, and we love even our enemies.”

“And also you count on us to keep doing this over and time and again — over again, forgive and overlook,” he continued. “While people we elect and trust in workplaces around this nation do their greatest to not shield us, to not think about us equal.”

The victims also included a person buying a cake for his grandson; a church deacon helping individuals get dwelling with their groceries; and a supermarket safety guard.

The net diary details a March 8 reconnaissance visit the writer made to Buffalo, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) from Gendron’s residence in Conklin, New York.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said at a news convention that there was info indicating Gendron was in Buffalo in March, but Gramaglia declined to say more.

The commissioner said quite a few investigators are working to acquire and overview Gendron’s online postings.

“There’s a variety of social that’s being checked out, or that’s being verified, captured,” Gramaglia stated. “A few of that takes warrants that should be served on various social media platforms.”

The writer of the diary talked about checking out targets together with the Tops Pleasant Market and said a safety guard asked what he was doing after his second visit of the day. He gave an excuse about gathering data and shortly left — “a detailed name,” he wrote.

A 180-page document purportedly written by Gendron stated the assault was meant to terrorize all nonwhite, non-Christian individuals and get them to depart the nation. Federal authorities said they are working to confirm the document’s authenticity.

Gendron had briefly been on authorities’ radar final spring, when state police had been called to his highschool for a report that the then-17-year-old had made threatening statements.

Belongia, the FBI agent, stated Gendron had responded to a question about future plans by saying that he needed to commit a murder-suicide.

A December Discord put up that Gendron apparently made said he had given that answer to a query about retirement in an economics class and ended up spending “one of the worst nights of my life” in a hospital.

Gramaglia stated Gendron had no further contact with regulation enforcement after a psychological well being evaluation that put him in a hospital for a day and a half. On the decision with Belongia, Gramaglia mentioned state police “did the whole lot inside the confines of the legislation” at that time.

It was unclear whether or not officers might have invoked New York’s “crimson flag” regulation, which lets legislation enforcement, school officials and families ask a court docket to order the seizure of weapons from individuals thought of dangerous.

Federal law bars folks from owning guns if a choose has decided they have a “psychological defect” or they have been compelled right into a psychological establishment. An evaluation alone would not trigger the prohibition.

On the White Home, President Joe Biden, who planned a visit Tuesday to Buffalo, paid tribute to the slain security guard, retired police officer Aaron Salter.

Salter fired repeatedly on the attacker, striking his armor-plated vest not less than as soon as earlier than being shot and killed. Biden stated Salter “gave his life trying to save lots of others.”

Authorities mentioned that in addition to the 10 Black individuals killed, three folks had been wounded: one Black, two white.

Zeneta Everhart mentioned her son, supermarket employee Zaire Goodman, was helping a shopper outdoors when he saw a person get out of a automotive in military gear and level a gun at him. Then a bullet hit Goodman within the neck.

“Mom! Mother, get right here now, get right here now! I bought shot!” he informed his mother by cellphone. Goodman, 20, was out of the hospital and doing nicely Monday, his mother stated.

In livestreamed video of the assault circulating on-line, the gunman skilled his weapon on a white particular person cowering behind a checkout counter, but said, “Sorry!” and didn’t shoot. Screenshots purporting to be from the broadcast appear to indicate a racial slur towards Black individuals scrawled on his rifle.
