Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech giant said its iconic music participant has been replaced by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, said: "At present, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've integrated an unimaginable music experience throughout all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with help for spatial audio - there is no better approach to enjoy, discover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the primary MP3 participant that might hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a whole new class of digital music participant that permits you to put your complete music collection in your pocket and take heed to it wherever you go," he said on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same again."

Related MP3 players launched by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success because the iPod.

Apple has released 5 variations of its music player - the Classic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod vary lately, with mobile phone technology enabling customers to listen to music services on their phones.

In 2014, the basic click wheel model was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano were killed off three years later.
