16-year-old arrested; deliberate capturing with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school shooting that could have included a bombing at Berkeley High School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department stated in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful system materials and threatening to commit a crime which can result in dying or great bodily damage.

Police said they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found components to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic objects that may very well be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a excessive priority for the department," police mentioned in a statement. 

Details on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case remains beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the school's community that the district was in close contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing risk to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our normal observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High School campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we were assured that this particular person didn't pose a right away risk to the Berkeley High College neighborhood."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action against the student.
