16-year-old arrested; deliberate capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass faculty shooting that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department stated in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine materials and threatening to commit a crime which is able to result in loss of life or nice bodily damage.

Police mentioned they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they found components to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic gadgets that could be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College security stays a high precedence for the division," police said in a press release. 

Details on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit weren't disclosed. Police said this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the varsity's community that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing risk to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and security employees about this investigation and, as is our commonplace follow, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we have been assured that this particular person didn't pose a right away risk to the Berkeley High College group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action against the scholar.
