Die Seitenbesitzer erkannten rasch den Wert einer nahmen Positionierung in Suchergebnissen und recht bald entwickelten sich Organisation, die sich auf die Besserung qualifizierten. Meta-Elemente geben einen Überblick per Gehalt einer Seite, dennoch setzte sich bald hoch, dass die Inanspruchnahme er Details nicht vertrauenswürdig war, da die Wahl der angewendeten Schlagworte dank dem Webmaster eine ungenaue Erläuterung des Seiteninhalts widerspiegeln kann. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in Meta-Elementen vermochten so irrelevante Internetseiten bei spezifischen Stöbern listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller diverse Attribute innerhalb des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu lenken, dass die Seite besser in Ergebnissen gelistet wird.[3] Da die damaligen Suchmaschinen im Netz sehr auf Punkte abhängig waren, die allein in den Taschen der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr vulnerabel für Falscher Gebrauch und Manipulationen in der Positionierung. Um bessere und relevantere Resultate in Resultaten zu erhalten, mussten sich die Anbieter der Suchmaschinen im Internet an diese Gegebenheiten adaptieren. Weil der Erfolg einer Suchseite davon zusammenhängt, besondere Suchergebnisse zu den gestellten Suchbegriffen anzuzeigen, vermochten unangebrachte Testurteile darin resultieren, dass sich die Benützer nach weiteren Wege bei dem Suche im Web umblicken. Die Auskunft der Search Engines lagerbestand in komplexeren Algorithmen für das Rang, die Merkmalen beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur nicht leicht beherrschbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin generierten mit „Backrub“ – dem Vorläufer von Google – eine Anlaufstelle, die auf einem mathematischen KI basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Websites gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus reingehen ließ. Auch sonstige Suchmaschinen im Internet relevant in Mitten der Folgezeit die Verlinkungsstruktur bspw. wohlauf der Linkpopularität in ihre Algorithmen mit ein. Google
