Developers who have SEO skills will find the SEO skills will move them along the career path faster because they understand both jobs and can communicate in a manner that results in better communication between departments. As mainly a freelance dev I know my knowledge of SEO played a part in getting most of my dev work because marketers and site owners know SEO is the conduit to visibility in Google and other SE which is one of the keys to online success.
